Film directors in London street sign names
From top to bottom:
Vigo Street, W1: Jean Vigo died tragically young with only one feature under his belt, the beautiful L’Atalante (1934). Modern London street signs are set in Univers Condensed Bold, designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1957.
John Carpenter Street, EC4: I’m not the first to mention this coincidence, and might not be the last, but John Carpenter the director has designed most of his film titles in Albertus, virtually the same font all the City of London street signs are set in. This one in EC4 is unfortunately not a tribute to the master horror director but to the 14th century Town Clerk of the same name.
Hitchcock Lane, E20: The Master of Suspense was born a few miles away on 517 High Road, Leytonstone.
Nolan Way, E5: Christopher Nolan, overrated British-American director.
Allen Street, W8: Woody Allen film titles have famously been set in the same font, Windsor, in over forty of his feature films.
London Street Signs is a lovely book by graphic designer Alistair Hall which explores the visual history of the city’s signs.
