14. Baby seal in spring, old seal in winter [Nature]
The symbolism of this was palatable: in spring a baby seal was on the otherwise empty beach at Porthcurno, just a few feet from me. Towards winter, I came across what I thought was a large dead seal on a beach on the Lizard. I went right up to it, it farted loudly, wailed, and slowly crawled back to the sea. I felt I’d disturbed it, like it was meant to die where I’d found it. I hoped it was swimming off to live some more.
15. Cornish Choughs [Nature]
We were lucky enough to see this lovely and scarce Cornish bird, with its distinctive red feet and beak, several times on the coast during lockdown, including once when a mother was feeding its chicks, who made one hell of a racket.
