Women in trees

Women in Trees and Photographs by Patrick Demarchelier

You wait for a book about women in trees for months then two come along into the Oxfam bookshop at the same time. Women in Trees is just that, a collection of black and white photos of women in trees from the 1920s to the 1950s, when it was a popular subject. The unexpected success of the book led to its follow up, More Women in Trees, both by German Jochen Raiss who spent 25 years collecting photos of the subject from flea markets. The other book is Photographs by Patrick Demarchelier. The cover is unfortunately the only photo of a woman in a tree, the rest being pretty dull fashion shoots and celebrity photos.

Daughters of the Dust

Julie Dasher’s 1991 film Daughters of the Dust also contains women in trees, shown as a safe place where they hang out, literally, and chat. Beyonce ‘borrowed’ many elements from the film for her ‘visual album’ Lemonade in 2016.

• Women in Trees has recently been reprinted by Hatje Cantz, as featured in The Guardian over the weekend.
