The recent appointment of Greg Schnapps to Secretary of State for Defence isn’t bad for a man who started off his career as a Photocopier Sales Rep. He then founded a variety of business websites, some of which had dodgy testimonials. Google banned 19 of his sites for copyright infringements. So far we’ve got a liar, all boding well for a career in politics. Except on his Wikipedia page it uses the word ‘unsuccessful’ at least three times when Greg “decided to go into politics” and stood for councillor. A loser and a liar, even better.

He then vehemently swore he never used a pseudonym and never had another job whilst being an MP, going so far as to threaten legal action against the person who accused him. The following year he admitted to both, using the phrase "over-firmly denied" to mean he lied through his teeth. When it comes to the Tories, you can’t make it up. Well, there’s no need, they do it by themselves.

Other than that, he’s the cousin to Mick Jones of The Clash, he’s been in a coma for a week, he added a V to his name (Greg V Schnapps) despite not having a middle name and he’s an all-round dodgy guy with shady deals plaguing his career (according to Wikipedia).

But what really gets me about him is the amount of Secretary of State posts he’s held. If I got his CV in the post for a job, I’d reject him immediately – can’t stick to anything.

He is now Secretary of State for Defence. He previously served as Secretary of State for Transport from 2019 to 2022; Home Secretary for six days in October 2022; Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy from October 2022 to February 2023 and Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero for six months in 2023.

I am continually astounded and perplexed by these hugely important posts filled by politicians who not only have no knowledge or experience of the sector but mostly no interest. Or, in the case of Liz Truss when she was Secretary of State for Environment, downright hostility towards the natural world.

Politics in general I find is one step forward, two back. A new government or secretary or MP gets in and spends their career undoing what the previous party or person did.
