This house is not in Redruth
I almost chocked on my Horlicks when watching Edgar Wright’s 2021 horror film Last Night in Soho – but not for its gore or ghosts. No, it was the assertion that this house – where the lead character, Eloise, lives with her grandmother before she leaves for the Big Smoke to study fashion – is in Redruth, Cornwall. It’s obviously not. It’s just too… nice. And neat. And there’s no cars, litter, roadworks, traffic cones or dead animals on the road. Redruth is just such a random, wrong place to say it is when it isn’t.
According to Movie Locations it’s actually Colstrope Farm in Hambleden, Buckinghamshire. The house is a minor star in its own right, having featured in Midsomer Murders, Morse, Downtown Abbey and Poirot. It seems a pretty random house to choose but it’s close to various film studios. I know the nature of film is deception but why Eloise couldn’t have come from Buckinghamshire is beyond me. It’s not as if her or her grandmother have a Cornish accent, or Cornwall is mentioned again.
As also mentioned in Movie Locations, the village of Hambleden has also featured in various films: The Witches (the 1966 Hammer version), Death on the Nile, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 101 Dalmatians and the film version of The Avengers.
