Lookalikes #61: Quatermass and the Ducks
No, not a new episode of the cult TV show but two albums featuring black and white covers with pterodactyls. Quatermass were an English prog rock band who only released the one album in 1970. The cover was designed by Hypgnosis by cutting out the prehistoric creatures from a book and sticking them on photos they took of buildings near Victoria station.
The Ducks were a short-lived Neil Young supergroup who played a bunch of gigs around Santa Cruz bars in 1977. Their often-bootlegged live sets were released in 2023 to great acclaim, and featured an album cover by rock and skateboard designer legend Jim Phillips, most famous for his Santa Cruz skateboard designs. Apparently he designed the cover back in 1977 for an official release but it didn’t happen and his artwork was shelved for decades until last year when it finally saw the light of day.
